**Mono Lake and Teaching**

No picture can describe the smell. The Northern Paiute People who lived near Mono Lake were known as the Kucadikadi which means "eaters of the brine fly pupae." Teachers have an obligation to obtain first-hand knowledge, so at the water's edge with mounds of fresh swarming brine fly pupae, I reached down . . . and was struck by a profound insight: Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. And those who can't teach, teach math.
